Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fines Collection by Garda Síochána.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

156 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if any study has been undertaken of the amount of time resources which have to be deployed by the Garda Síochána in the collection of fines; and if he has any proposals to relieve the Gardaí from this time and resource-consuming activity.

Gardaí are involved in the court fines payment process only in cases where fines have not been paid by the due date and where a warrant is issued by the court to enforce payment. The enforcement of warrants whether for payment of fines or for any other purpose is considered to be an integral part of the law enforcement duties of the Garda Síochána.

No specific study of the Garda time spent on this duty has been undertaken, but this aspect of Garda operations, like all others, is kept under continuous review by the Garda authorities.
