Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Athlone By-Pass.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

161 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment when the Athlone by-pass and river crossing will be completed; when it will be open to the general public; the original estimated cost; the current estimates of the final cost; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The section of the Athlone by-pass, between the Dublin Road and the Ballymahon Road, is already open to traffic. The balance of the by-pass is due for completion in early 1991.

When construction commenced in 1983, the estimated cost of the scheme was £28 million, in 1983 prices. Allowing for extensions in the scope of the scheme, costing of the order of £3 million, the outturn cost is now estimated at £36 million at current prices.
