Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Toxic Chemical Emissions.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

199 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the level of NO x emissions in Ireland in 1987 and the facilities which are being fitted at Moneypoint Power Station, County Clare to stabilise these emissions.

The most recent detailed NO x emission inventory for Ireland indicates that total NO x emissions from all sources amounted 115,000 tonnes in 1987. Road transport accounted for 48,800 tonnes, off road transport and aircraft accounted for 13,900 tonnes, power generation accounted for 37,700 tonnes, commercial-industrial sources accounted for 10,400 tonnes and the domestic sector accounted for 4,300 tonnes.

Low NO x burners will be fitted to each of the three boiler units at Moneypoint. The detailed planning and design has been completed and the first unit will be fitted in 1991 with the remaining two in place by 1993. The estimated cost of carrying out these works is £7 million.
