Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Long-Term Unemployed.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

20 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he proposes to take in conjunction with FÁS to ensure that persons in long-term unemployment are offered jobs as polling clerks and assistants in the 1990 presidential election; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Statutory responsibility for taking the poll at a presidential election, including the employment of staff and the efficient conduct of the poll, rests with the local returning officers. They are not subject to direction as to how they carry out their duties. However, at recent elections and referenda I asked returning officers to employ unemployed persons wherever possible and to contact FÁS for this purpose.
