Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Air Pollution Act, 1987.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

63 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment the instructions which have been given to local authorities with regard to the policing of the Air Pollution Act, 1987 (Marketing, Distribution and Sale of Fuels) Regulations, 1990; if any additional staff are being made available to local authorities for this purpose; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Enforcement of the Air Pollution Act, 1987 (Marketing, Sale and Distribution of Fuels) Regulations, 1990 is a matter for the three local authorities concerned, and while the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment has had discussions with senior officials of these authorities about the steps to be taken to ensure effective enforcement, the issue of instructions does not arise.

The allocation of staff to the various local authority programme areas, and the recruitment of staff where necessary, is a matter for determination by each local authority.
