Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - Climate Changes.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

167 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the expert studies which the Government has commissioned to establish the specific implications of possible climate changes for Ireland; the way in which it will be carried out and by whom; and when the reports are expected.

The studies, which should be completed later this year, will deal with the following: emissions of greenhouse gases in Ireland; effects on agriculture and forestry; implications for the energy sector; and sea level changes.

A director has been appointed to oversee the carrying out of the studies and to ensure that they are completed as quickly as possible.

The study dealing with emissions of greenhouse gases is alredy under way; following the normal tendering process, that work has been assigned to Eolas. Terms of reference for the study on sea level changes are almost finalised and tenders for the carrying out of the work will be invited shortly. Terms of reference for the remaining studies are being prepared at present with a view to getting the tendering procedures completed and the studies under way as quickly as possible.
