Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - Portland Row Housing Allocation.

Tony Gregory

Question:

180 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department has imposed any conditions or restrictions on the future allocation of houses in the recently approved scheme for local authority housing at Portland Row, Dublin 1; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The letting of local authority houses is a matter for the housing authority concerned and I have no direct function in the matter.

The capital allocation notified to Dublin Corporation on 22 February 1990 for its local authority housing construction programme in 1990 included £1 million for the provision acquisition of 60 dwellings exclusively for the rehousing of tenants from the Sheriff Street. Flats complex. This was subsequently increased to 70 dwellings. By letter of 23 May 1990, the corporation submitted their proposed programme of new starts/acquisitions for 1990 and indicated that the commencement of the Portland Row Phase 2 Scheme comprising 35 units could be financed from the foregoing £1 million allocation. In responding to the corporation's letter on 31 May 1990, the Department sanctioned the housing construction/acquisition programme proposed by the corporation and noted that three elements thereof — totalling 70 dwellings — including Portland Row Phase 2, would be used to facilitate the rehousing of a corresponding number of tenants from the Sheriff Street Flats complex.
