Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin-Maynooth Rail Line Stock.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

213 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if, in view of the recent opening of a number of new stations on the Dublin-Maynooth commuter rail line, he will consider favourably an application for funds to provide new rolling stock for the service; if consideration will be given to extending the service to Kilcock, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A proposal has been made by the Board of CIE for investment in diesel railcars for use on the rail network, including the Dublin-Maynooth line. This proposal, which would involve substantial expenditure by CIE, is under detailed examination at present in my Department.

In relation to possible extension of the Dublin-Maynooth service, I have been advised by the board that recent surveys of prospective passenger traffic carried out by Irish Rail indicate that the opening of a new station at Kilcock would not be justified at this stage. However, I understand that Irish Rail are keeping this matter under review.
