Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - Primary School Numbers.

John Browne

Question:

38 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education the total number of new entrants to primary schools in each of the years from 1986 to 1989; and the number of schools who will not regain the teacher lost under the 1987 pupil-teacher ratio rule in September 1990.

The number of pupils enrolled in junior infants in national schools from 1986 to 1989 was as follows: 1986-87, 71, 717; 1987-88, 69,304; 1988-89, 65, 542.

A breakdown of national school pupils by standard is not yet available in respect of the 1989-90 academic year.

As the number of teaching posts in a school for a particular year is decided by reference to the enrolments in the school on the 30 September of the previous school year and because enrolments fluctuate from year to year it would not be feasible to determine what schools, if any, would or would not regain posts lost two years previously.
