Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - National School Teacher Vacancies.

Dick Spring

Question:

48 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education if she will outline, based on present trends and on available information, the number of posts in national schools which will become vacant through retirement in each of the next five years.

The number of teachers in national schools due to retire compulsorily having reached the age limit in each of the next five years is as follows: 1991, 70; 1992, 49; 1993, 90; 1994, 82; 1995, 117.

In addition, the number of retirements include teachers retiring voluntarily before having reached the age for compulsory retirement and teachers retiring on disability pension. While changes may be taking place in the pattern of such retirements, it is currently estimated that approximately 170 teachers per annum will retire on these grounds.
Each retirement may not create a fillable vacancy as the staffing level for a school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on the 30 September of the previous year.
