Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bog Conservation.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

109 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Finance the amount of raised and blanket bog which has been purchased to date in 1990 for conservation purposes; and the cost of same.

Agreement has been reached for the purchase of 370 hectares of blanket bog, adjacent to Knockmoyle Sheskin Nature Reserve in County Mayo, for £228,000.

It is hoped to reach agreement this week with Bord na Móna for the purchase of approximately 2,000 hectares of raised bog.

There are a number of other areas of blanket bog for which the Wildlife Service is in the early stages of negotiating.
