Question:

172 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline in respect of (a) 1 August 1990 and (b) the latest date for which figures are available (1) the maximum price for a gallon of premium grade petrol; (2) the element in the price represented by excise duties and (3) the element in the price represented by VAT.

On 1 August 1990 the maximum retail price of premium grade petrol was 60.5p per litre (which converts to about £2.75p per gallon). Currently, the maximum retail price of premium petrol is 70.5p per litre (about £3.20p per gallon).

The following table indicates the excise duty and VAT elements of the maximum retail price of a litre of premium grade petrol:
