Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Binnion (Donegal) Bridge.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

213 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Binnion Bridge, Clonmany, County Donegal cannot be constructed as finance has not been made available to Donegal County Council to have this work carried out; and if, in view of the inconvenience being caused to local people and visitors to this area, he will make a special grant available to have the bridge built.

Question:

226 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the inconvenience being caused to local people and visitors as a result of the neglect in building Binnion Bridge, Clonmany, County Donegal; and if he will make a special grant available to have the bridge repaired or rebuilt.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 213 and 226 together.

Donegal County Council made a recent application to my Department for national lottery funds for the construction of a pedestrian bridge at Binnion. However, as I have allocated the full £6.5 million made available to me under the 1990 amenities/recreational facilities grant scheme, this application cannot be considered under this year's scheme. It would, of course, be open to the council to reapply for a grant under any further scheme.
As Binnion Bridge will not form part of the public road network, road grants are not appropriate to it.
