Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tallaght (Dublin) College.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

299 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education when she will appoint a principal to Tallaght Regional College, Dublin 24; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Chris Flood

Question:

327 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Education the progress which has been made in the provision of a regional college for Tallaght, Dublin 24; when the college will be completed; the range of subjects which will be available; when it is intended to appoint a principal and board of management; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 299 and 327 together.

The college is in the course of construction since early April 1990. Work is up to programme.

As I indicated to the House in my 1990 budget speech, I expect the college to be fully operational in early 1992.

The college will provide a range of full-time courses in engineering, science and business studies including languages. The composition of, and appointment procedures for boards of management of regional technical colleges are being reviewed at present in the context of proposed legislation on the matter. The arrangements which will apply generally shall also be put in place for Tallaght Regional Technical College.

My Department have agreed that County Dublin VEC may proceed with arrangements for the appointment of a principal for Tallaght Regional Technical College. It is planned that the appointment will be effective from 1 April, 1991.
