Written Answers. - Presidential Election Expenditure.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

35 Mr. Dukes asked the Taoiseach the expenditure of public funds which has been caused by (a) the use of Dublin Castle as a location for the Fianna Fáil Presidential election broadcast; (b) the use of the Government Press Secretary as a spokesman for the Fianna Fáil Presidential candidate; and (c) the involvement of an adviser in his Department as an adviser to the Fianna Fáil Presidential candidate.

No expenditure of public funds arose because of the use of Dublin Castle Conference Centre as a location for this broadcast. The conference centre is available for rental on a commercial basis, by arrangement with the Commissioners of Public Works, and the approved booking fee has been charged in this case.

As regards the remainder of the question, the conditions of service of the persons mentioned do not debar them from assisting the Tánaiste in his election campaign.
