47 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the reason for the delay in sanctioning the construction of the much needed and long overdue railcars by Iarnród Éireann at their Inchicore Works, Dublin 8; and if sanction is now forthcoming.
The CIE proposal to acquire railcars would involve substantial expenditure by the board. It was necessary, therefore, having regard to the serious state of the group's finances, to carry out a detailed evaluation of the board's proposal. This evaluation has now been completed and I expect to be in a position to make an announcement in the matter shortly.
