Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Redeployment of Customs and Excise Officers.

Ivan Yates

Question:

88 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance the proposals which he has in place for the redeployment of customs and excise officers at frontier borders such as Rosslare Harbour, County Wexford post-1992; whether a voluntary redundancy scheme together with a redeployment programme will be put in place; if he will consider redeployment within the Revenue Commissioners to other branches of tax administration; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The extent of any surplus in the cadre of customs and excise staff, throughout the service, will not be known until the detailed arrangements for border controls (including non-EC traffic) and other related activities are determined which, as the Deputy will appreciate, is dependent, inter alia, on decisions at EC level. When this information is known, measures for dealing with any surplus staffing will be put in place in consultation with the relevant staff interests.
