Written Answers. - Farmers' Income Tax.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

96 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Finance (a) the number of farmers liable for income tax in the current year and (b) the number of farmers who actually paid income tax in the last year for which figures are available.

The relevant statistics available are in respect of the income tax year 1989-90. The number of farmers whose liability to income tax was assessed for that year is estimated at 61,000 of whom some 28,000 are estimated to have had a tax liability.

The number of farmers who paid income tax for the year 1989-90 up to 31 May 1990, the latest date for which the relevant statistics are available, is estimated at 27,000.
