Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roundstone (Galway) Pier.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

123 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Marine the current position regarding the rebuilding of Roundstone Pier, County Galway; if he will make available the engineering report which was sought by the local community; his views on whether this pier should now be rebuilt due to the fact that the position has deteriorated and fishermen are finding it increasingly difficult to work from the remaining quayside; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that since the head of the pier collapsed the wave pattern has changed and the harbour is setting shallower so the fishermen frequently have to move the trawlers into the bay at 4 a.m. and that this is a cause of concern to the whole Roundstone community; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The damaged pier at Roundstone is the responsibility of Galway County Council. I recently announced a decision to grant aid the reconstruction of the pier head at Roundstone. This is included in my Department's fishery harbour development programme.

The council undertook a site investigation at the damaged structure, which I understand proved inconclusive. Following advice to the council from my Department's engineering branch, a further site investigation was commissioned. It is a matter for the council to decide whether they wish to release any report of the site investigations. I have no evidence to suggest that the damaged pier head is the cause of siltation in the harbour.
