Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - Appointment of Teachers.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

135 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if she will outline (a) her policy regarding class size in one-teacher schools, (b) whether she will assist such schools which have a very high pupil/teacher ratio and (c) whether she will sanction the immediate appointment of an additional teacher to Kilkenny national school, Glenties, County Donegal, which has 32 pupils and one teacher given that this class size is above the national average, even in cases where all the pupils are in a single-grade class.

The authorised staffing for a national school is determined in accordance with the agreement reached under the Programme for National Recovery. Under this agreement the staffing of a school for a particular year is determined by the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The authorised staffing for Kilkenny national school for the 1990-91 school year based on the enrolment on 30 September 1989 is a principal only.
