Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - Adult Education Budget.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

136 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education the percentage of the total education budget which goes to adult education; and the way in which this compares with other EC countries.

The identifiable provision for adult education in my Department's 1990 budget is .524 per cent of the budget. This does not include estimated expenditure of £2.746 million by VECs in 1990 on tuition fees for adult education courses and expenditure on associated non-pay costs which are in the main matched by receipts. Expenditure on adult education from the provision for third level institutions is not reflected in the percentage quoted.

Due to the variety of systems and administrative arrangements employed in EC countries in the provision and funding of adult education, meaningful comparison would not be possible.
