Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - Donegal Second Level Education.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

142 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the number of students in Clonleigh Parish, Lifford, County Donegal, requiring second level education; and, in view of the large number who qualify, the proposals she has to provide a much needed second level college in the parish.

Lifford is in the Raphoe catchment area. There is a vocational school in Raphoe with accommodation to cater for 425 pupils and the 1989-90 enrolment was 374. Lifford is situated within c.6 miles from Raphoe.

My Department is satisfied that the second level education needs of students from Lifford are adequately served by the Raphoe centre and school transport to Raphoe is available to these students. The number of pupils leaving primary schools in Lifford would not be sufficient to maintain another post-primary school in the Raphoe/Lifford area.

It is my Department's intention to continue the present arrangement and there are no proposals to establish a second level school in Lifford.
