Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - Printing of Ministerial Statement.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

47 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs (a) the reason for the special printing of his statement to Dáil Éireann of 29 August 1990 on Iraq's invasion of Kuwait; (b) the number of copies which were printed; (c) the cost of printing; and (d) if he will list those supplied with this special printed version.

As the Deputy is aware, a special two day sitting of the Dáil, which had been in recess, was held on 28 and 29 August to discuss the Gulf Crisis and related matters. My address to the Dáil on 29 August provided an opportunity to make a clear and comprehensive statement of the Government's position on all aspects of this crisis. Because of the importance I attached to the statement, and the degree of interest in it both at home and abroad, I instructed my Department to have the text printed in booklet form for distribution. Three thousand copies were produced at a cost of £1,187.55. Copies of the statement in this format were widely distributed, including to the relatives of Irish citizens trapped in Iraq and Kuwait, to all Irish embassies abroad for onward circulation to contacts, particularly in Government and the media in their countries of accreditation, to all foreign embassies in Ireland, to the media in Ireland and to various other interested parties.
