Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - European Agency Location.

Alan Shatter

Question:

51 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reason a location for the siting of the European Environment Agency was not agreed during the course of Ireland's Presidency of the EC; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the course of the Irish Presidency, the Council decided to establish a European Environment Agency and adopted the necessary legislation to this effect. However, the question of the location of the agency remained undecided and has become part of a wider debate within the Community on the site of the institutions such as the European Parliament and the specialised agencies. The Italian Presidency was asked after the issue had been discussed at the Dublin European Council to submit a proposal on the matter.
