Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - UK Poll Tax.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

74 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if there is a liability on persons from this country who work in the United Kingdom, for short periods, to pay the poll tax; and whether any representations have been made to the UK authorities about this matter.

All persons aged 18 years or over are liable for the community charge or poll tax which is payable to the local authority where they reside. Temporary residents in an area are liable for a pro rata charge.

It would not be appropriate for the Government to comment on a matter which is primarily an internal British administrative one.

I would draw the Deputy's attention to the answer I gave on 9 May 1990 on this subject.
