Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - Income Tax Rebate.

Alan Shatter

Question:

80 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Finance the reason persons (details supplied) in Dublin 14 have not received an income tax rebate; and when same will be made.

I have been informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the tax office dealing with the tax affairs of one of the spouses is the subject of industrial action due to the non-replacement of a member of staff. The trade union which represents clerical assistants in the Office of the Chief Inspector of Taxes, has refused, as a matter of policy, to allow its members to do the work allocations of non-replaced officers. Consequently, a full review of both taxpayers' liability has not been carried out in this case to date. However, the recent introduction of recruitment of clerical assistants will ease the situation. Consideration and priority will be given to the cases which are in arrears.

The Revenue Commissioners have assured me that they are making every effort to resolve this matter through local negotiations with the union concerned and the redeployment and allocation of staff resources whenever possible.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

81 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Waterford has not been paid the arrears of income tax for which she applied in February 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer ceased employment on 27 February, 1990 and that in consequence, she submitted a claim for repayment of tax to her Inspector of Taxes on 5 March 1990. A cheque in settlement for £26.82 was issued to the taxpayer on 10 May 1990.

A complete review of the taxpayer's liability for 1989-90 has now been carried out. A balancing statement for the year 1989-90 was issued to her on 24 October 1990, advising her of a further repayment of tax of £230.40, and a cheque in settlement for this amount will be issued in the near future.
