Question:

90 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in the provision of a Garda station in Leixlip, County Kildare; if he will confirm that there has been no change of policy in regard to the provision of the station; if negotiations are currently in train with a view to the acquisition of suitable premises; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that several suitable premises have been disposed of in the area in the past three years; if there is any other reason for the delay in the provision of the station; if he will give an indication of the date it is expected that the station will open; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been no change of policy regarding the provision of a Garda sub-station at Leixlip. As indicated in the reply to the Deputy's question on 21 June 1990 (Question No. 75 columns 775-6), the Commissioners of Public Works examined several premises on offer in Leixlip but a number of these were found to be unsuitable and, in other cases, negotiations to secure acceptable terms proved fruitless.

Negotiations are being completed in respect of a suitable premises and the legal documentation is being finalised. The premises will be occupied when the necessary adaptation works have been completed. Arrangements for these works are being put in train.

91 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Finance the progress that has been made towards the provision of a new Garda barracks at Castlecomer, County Kilkenny, which is urgently needed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With a view to providing a new Garda station at Castlecomer, County Kilkenny, the Commissioners of Public Works are examining a number of properties in the area. When their investigations have been completed, the commissioners expect to be in a position to undertake negotiations with a view to purchase of a suitable property.
