Vol. 402 No. 6

Written Answers - EC Subsidies.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

22 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on whether the high EC subsidies, through the intervention safety mechanism, encourages intensive production of dairy products with resulting difficulties in quality control, as noted in the recent EC Court of Auditors report on An Bord Bainne.

The Court of Auditors has not yet furnished a final report following a series of visits to Ireland over the period January to June 1990. The court has, however, furnished preliminary observations and no firm conclusions can be drawn from those observations. Strict quality control on the production of all dairy products is carried out by my Department to ensure that the highest standards are met by these products, both for the home and export markets.
