Vol. 403 No. 2

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Emmet Stagg — the gross overcrowding in unsuitable prefabricated buildings at the CBS secondary school in Naas, despite repeated undertakings since 1985 to provide the agreed accommodation; (2) Deputy Bill Cotter — the question of national security arising from the placing of a bomb at the checkpoint near the village of Roslea; and the threats to shopkeepers in the North who serve members of the Garda and Army; (3) Deputy Willie O'Dea — the two recent decisions by the family division of the UK High Court which may enable an Irish person to evade the obligation to pay maintenance to a spouse by going to the UK, securing a UK divorce and remaining in the UK; and whether the Minister has any proposals to close off this potential loophole; (4) Deputy Bernard Allen — the unacceptable situation in Cork where persons with medical cards and/or hospital services cards have been put on long waiting lists for necessary surgery, but are being offered almost immediate attention if they are prepared to pay substantial amounts of money; (5) Deputy David Andrews — the proposed new Garda Síochána station for Dún Laoghaire; and its present intended location; (6) Deputy John Connor — the illegal export from this country of a bronze age gold collar; and its appearance at a leading London fine art auction room for apparent valuation or sale; (7) Deputy Patrick J. Sheehan — the serious crisis appertaining to the farming community throughout the country, by the fact that their areas were not included in the recent disadvantaged areas extension package submitted to Brussels; (8) Deputy Charles Flanagan — the urgent need to provide adequate national primary public lighting in the village of Borris-in-Ossory, County Laois; (9) Deputy Paul Connaughton — the huge immediate problems facing pig producers in this country; (10) Deputy Pat McCartan — the Darndale refurbishment scheme, with particular reference to the delay in its programme and the serious undermining of the project as a result of that delay; (11) Deputy Gerry O'Sullivan — the serious local authority housing situation which exists in Cork city and (12) Deputy Eric Byrne — the practice of the Department of Social Welfare in substantially reducing the unemployment assistance of single persons living at home on the basis that they are receiving board and lodging from their families, and the pressure this is exerting on young people to leave the family home and, in some cases, emigrate;

(13) Deputy Jim Kemmy — the collapse of the building firm of Fitzgerald and Dowling Limited, Management Contractors, at the Savoy Complex Limerick with the loss of about 50 jobs; (14) Deputy Michael Finucane — the current approach to industrial development in the mid-west region with the altered mandate of SFADCo and the enhanced role of the IDA; (15) Deputy John Bruton — the position of Irish residents in Iraq and Kuwait, in view of the impending UN Security Council resolution sanctioning force to end the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait; (16) Deputy Roger Garland — the situation which has arisen whereby the Office of Public Works/Wildlife Service are allegedly breaching the EC Directive on shooting wildbirds; (17) Deputy Jimmy Deenihan — the unavailability of the new 1'50000 topographical maps from the Ordinance Survey because of an industrial dispute; and (18) Deputy John Browne (Carlow/Kilkenny)— the failure of the Minister for Agriculture and Food to implement the regulations covering the Abattoirs Act, as promised in reply to Parliamentary Question No. 29 of 17 May 1990, thus depriving county councils of the legal powers to collect fees for the work of veterinary inspectors.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by the following Deputies: Deputy John Bruton, Deputy Jim Kemmy and Deputy Eric Byrne.
