Vol. 403 No. 2

Written Answers. - Quality of Bathing Water.

Ivan Yates

Question:

78 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he intends taking to ensure that all local authorities comply with the EC (Quality of Bathing Water) Regulations and in particular those provisions in the regulations which require that bathing water sample results be made available by each local authority to members of the general public and that there be easy and ready access to such results; and if he will make a statement on the results of the survey (details supplied) which revealed that of 18 beaches for which such information was requested, at local level, water quality test results were available in only ten cases.

I have recently reminded county and city managers of the need to have registers of bathing water sampling results available for public inspection at local authority offices. I have also asked managers to consider other ways to make these results more generally available to the public, including their display at beaches.
