Vol. 403 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilmainham Gaol.

Jim Kemmy

Question:

20 Mr. Kemmy asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the work that has been carried out to date on Kilmainham Gaol since responsibility for its upkeep and operation was taken over by his office; if he has any plans to develop or improve it as part of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Easter Rising; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Since the responsibility for the maintenance and operation of Kilmainham Gaol was assumed by the Commissioners of Public Works in June 1986 a number of major improvements have been carried out. These works include the renovation of the infirmary and its fitting out for use as an administrative, archival and research centre for the gaol and the provision of an audio-visual theatre in the chapel. Significant improvements have been made to the forecourt area, which include paving, repairs to metal work and stonework and the provision of floodlighting of the front facade. Other major works include the weather proofing of the west wing by reslating of the roof, repair and replacement of the windows and the repointing of the walls.

These works are part of a comprehensive programme to give expression of an overall commitment to maintain the gaol in perpetuity for the nation as a national monument. There are no plans to highlight any specific aspect of this ongoing development programme as part of the celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of the Easter Rising.
