Vol. 403 No. 10

Written Answers. - Goat Farming.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

21 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give consideration to the licensing of goat farming for the production of goats' milk and the sale of unpasteurised goats' milk as a health food, for which there is a growing demand; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I will be providing for controls on the production and sale of goats' milk in new national dairying legislation which is at present in preparation. Under these measures the sale of such milk will be permitted only if pasteurised or heattreated and the same conditions as regards licensing, registration of producers etc. will apply as for cows' milk. I consider that the sale of unpasteurised goats' milk should be prohibited from a public health point of view.
