Question:

58 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of persons employed in the meat processing sector for each year from 1985 to 1990; if he will outline (a) the number employed in that side of the industry catering for the domestic market and (b) the number employed in the export side of the industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 58 together.

Quarterly figures of industrial employment published by the Central Statistics Office show total numbers engaged in the slaughtering and preserving of meat in premises employing three or more persons. These figures do not distinguish between the domestic and export sides of the industry. End-year numbers for the years 1985 to 1989 are as follows:

Numbers

1985

9,600

1986

9,600

1987

9,400

1988

10,100

1989

10,300

For 1990 numbers employed at end-June, the most recent period available, were 9,400 compared with 8,900 at the same date in 1989.
