Vol. 403 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dublin as EC Cultural Capital.

Dick Spring

Question:

34 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs (a) the funds (b) the resources and (c) the ideas or other supports, he plans to contribute towards the efforts of Dublin as the European Community cultural capital for 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Taoiseach, whose Department have overall reponsibility for the 1991 Dublin European City of Culture project, have given a mandate to Dublin Promotions Organisation Limited (DPOL) to plan and organise an appropriate cultural programme for Dublin in 1991.

The Deputy will appreciate that the funds provided to my Department for cultural relations are primarily intended to provide assistance to Irish cultural events abroad. However, I have personally conveyed to the chairman of the board of DPOL that the resources of my Department will be available to provide every practical assistance in organising the programme for 1991. In particular my Department, who are represented on the board of DPOL, have been helping to establish contact with overseas cultural bodies and individuals, whom DPOL would wish to see participate in the programme, and our Embassies and Consulates are also actively disseminating official publicity material on the year to media and cultural contacts overseas.
