Vol. 403 No. 10

Written Answers. - Book of Estimates.

Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

41 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the increase in the Public Capital Programme, 1991 Tourism related Heritage Projects; and the way in which the £10,692,000 will be spent.

The figure of £10,692,000 refers to the entire cost of capital works associated with parks, inland waterways, wildlife service and national monuments. The amount allocated for EC Structural Funds projects under the operational programme for tourism is included in that figure. The increase arises mainly from the fact that the Structural Fund programme extends over a five year period from 1989 to 1993 and that the setting-up time for projects gives rise to lower expenditure in the early years. The Structural Fund allocation will be expended on projects which have been approved under the programme.

Question:

42 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the increase in Vote 16 subhead D in the 1991 Book of Estimates (Abridged Version).

The increase in subhead D of Vote 16 is due to the projected additional advertising and accommodation costs arising from the schedule of open competitions planned for 1991 for posts in the Civil Service, the local authorities and the health boards. As the Deputy is aware, Vote 16 covers the expenses of both the Civil Service Commission and the Local Appointments Commission. All the costs incurred by the latter are reimbursed.

44 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the increase in Vote 10 subhead G in the 1991 Book of Estimates for Public Services (Abridged Version); and the way in which the £9,987,000 will be distributed and/or spent.

The increase in the allocation for subhead G mainly relates to commitments under the EC Structural Fund programme concerning tourism related projects.

The principal projects involved are interpretative centres for the Wicklow Mountains and Burren National Parks, An Blascaod Mór and Boyne Valley National Historic Parks and also restoration and development works to Kilkenny Castle.
