Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

72 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the reason for the increase provided for in Vote 34 subhead Q of the 1991 Book of Estimates (Abridged Version); and the way in which the £26,882,000 will be spent.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 71 and 72 together.

The increase in Vote 34 subhead Q reflects the amount approved for 1991 in the sub-programme for Science and Technology in the Programme for Industrial Development, 1989-1993, under the EC Structural Funds. The sub-programme is projected to expand over those years.

The money will be spent on four main measures: programmes in advanced technology; higher education/industry linkages; technology services to industry; and regional infrastructure development.

These measures are described in detail in the programme for industrial development mentioned above which is available in the Library of the House.

The £11,282,000 provided for in the Public Capital Programme represents the capital element of the £26,882,000 referred to above. This will be used for buildings, laboratories and a variety of research equipment in support of the activities involved under the four measures listed.
