Vol. 403 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dublin EC Cultural Capital.

Dick Spring

Question:

128 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Health (a) the funds, (b) the resources and (c) the ideas or other supports he plans to contribute towards the efforts of Dublin as the European Community cultural capital for 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am very supportive of the efforts being made for Dublin as the Community's cultural capital for 1991. While my Department have no direct involvement in the matter, I am seeking the co-operation of health agencies in the Dublin area in supporting this event.

At this stage I can say that the Eastern Health Board have proposals for the restoration and conversion of Dr. Steevens Hospital to provide a new headquarters for the board. Dr. Steevens is an eighteenth century early classical building of significant historical importance.

It is also the intention of the Eastern Health Board to develop a number of initiatives to encourage the participation of the handicapped, the disabled, the elderly in arts and cultural activities during 1991.
