Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

135 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Education the reason for the increase in Vote 27 subhead H in the the 1991 Book of Estimates for Public Services (Abridged Version); and the way in which the £4.807 million will be spent.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 134 and 135 together.

The increased allocation to Vote 27 subhead G reflects the extra costs arising from the recent approval of seven additional posts of child care assistant. It also reflects the impact of a special pay award to child care assistants generally. The total allocation under this subhead is expended on remuneratiom of child care assistants.

The increased allocation to Vote 27 subhead H is intended mainly to cover extra pay and non-pay costs associated with the provision of additional places for young offenders.

The total allocation under subhead H will be expended on the operation and maintenance of the special schools in question.
