Vol. 404 No. 2

Written Answers. - Admission for Cardiac By-Pass Surgery.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

117 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the very serious condition of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 24, who is in urgent need of heart surgery, he will arrange to have the life saving treatment she needs made available to her without delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I am sure the Deputy will appreciate, the scheduling of surgery is a matter for the clinical judgment of the consultant concerned. I have made inquiries from the Mater Hospital who have informed me that this person has been on the waiting list for cardiac by-pass surgery since 2 October 1990. The hospital is unable at this stage to give a precise admission date for her operation. However, if this person feels that she needs more immediate attention she should contact her general practitioner who would be in the best position to highlight her case to her consultant.
