Vol. 404 No. 2

Written Answers. - Purchase of Land for Forestry.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

79 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Energy if any criteria exist to control the purchase of agricultural land for forestry purposes by the State and semi-State bodies.

Since the establishment of Coillte Teoranta in January 1989, my Department no longer acquire land for forestry purposes. Coillte must submit to and agree with me each year a programme for the acquisition and sale of land. In approving this programme my aims are to ensure that only land suitable for forestry is acquired, is capable of producing an economic yield of timber, that value for money is achieved and that the programme is compatible with national forestry policy.
