Vol. 404 No. 2

Written Answers. - Motorway Safety Standards.

Chris Flood

Question:

91 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that (a) Dublin County Council intend to open the western parkway motorway for vehicular traffic on 17 December 1990 (b) the two pedestrian bridges approved by him will not have been provided and (c) this is a serious issue from a pedestrian safety point of view; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the remaining section of the western parkway motorway was opened to vehicular traffic on 17 December, 1990 and that the two pedestrian overbridges, which were approved by my Department, have not yet been constructed. I understand, however, that one temporary pedestrian overbridge is in place and that a second temporary bridge will be available for use by the end of next month. The timing of the opening of the scheme and the question of pedestrian safety is primarily a matter for the local authority.
