Vol. 404 No. 2

Written Answers. - Westport Improvements.

Enda Kenny

Question:

107 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received representations from Westport Urban District Council regarding town improvements (details supplied); if he has examined these proposals; and if he will make a statement on the funding of the improvement.

Application was made by Westport Urban District Council under the 1990 amenity-recreational facilities grants scheme in respect of the amenity projects referred to. It was not possible to allocate grants to these projects because of the limited funds available for distribution. It will be open to the council to renew these applications under the 1991 scheme.

As regards the roads projects referred to, the position is that work on urban roads normally falls to be financed by the local authority from their own resources, supplemented by the block grants allocated annually by my Department. The submission of Westport Urban District Council for special grant assistance will be borne in mind when the road grants for 1991 are being determined, having regard to the level of funds available and the competing demands of other local authorities.
