Ivan Yates

Question:

114 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health if he will consider introducing a legal time limit on the consent period for natural parents to determine the parentage of adopted children.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 110 and 114 together.

The major recommendation of the Review Committee on Adoption Services was that the law be changed to allow for the adoption of children born within marriage. This was provided for in the Adoption Act, 1988, within the parameters of the Constitution.

Consideration will be given to the question of implementing other recommendations of the review committee, including those in relation to existing consent procedures, when work on the passage of the Child Care Bill, 1988, and the proposed Bill to deal with foreign adoptions has been completed.
