Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Requests for Inquiry Results.

Nuala Fennell

Question:

177 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Health the reason he has not responded to repeated requests for the results of an inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse against a child in a case (details supplied) in Dublin 24.

I understand from inquiries which I initiated when the Deputy made representations to me some weeks ago that the case in question was investigated by the health board concerned and sexual abuse was confirmed.

The parents of the child were advised of the outcome of that assessment and offered the support and assistance which is available to both victims and their families in such instances.

It appears from correspondence that I have received that the parents are concerned at the outcome of the criminal investigation of the case. The Deputy will appreciate that I have no function in relation to that aspect of the case. The prosecution of alleged offenders is a matter for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The decision on whether or not to proceed with a prosecution rests with the director.
