Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Radio Frequency Radiation Measurement.

Jim Higgins

Question:

33 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Communications the type of equipment which is used for monitoring radiation levels from MMDS; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The central piece of equipment used by my Department for the purpose of measuring radio frequency radiation from MMDS transmitters is a spectrum analyser. A suitable antenna is also required.

Measurements of the levels can also be made by accurately measuring the signals after they have been converted to broadcast frequencies by the standard MMDS receive equipment and applying standard mathematical formulae. Other types of equipment could also be used to give reliable measurements such as accurately calibrated signal level meters or power meters although it may be difficult to obtain equipment of this nature that would actually register the low levels involved.
