Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Free Legal Advice Centres Submissions.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

40 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice his views on whether in order to comply with the EC Directive on equal treatment, protecting the rights of workers made redundant and social security protection for workers moving between member states, legal aid is required in respect of tribunals to determine such matters; if he has received any details of the complaint; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

62 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Justice if he has received details of the complaint made to the Council of Europe regarding an alleged breach by Ireland of the European Convention on Human Rights as a result of the failure to provide an adequate free legal aid and advice service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 62 together.

As I have already indicated during the course of my reply to a question on 27 November, 1990 (Official Report Vol: 403; columns 28 to 30 inclusive), I am aware that Free Legal Advice Centres Ltd. have made submissions to the European Commission and the Council of Europe in these matters.

I expect that in the normal course of events I will be requested by those bodies to respond and I will do so directly to them at that stage.
