Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Titles.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

46 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice if he will abolish the title bangharda so that hereafter all garda officers below the rank of sergeant will be referred to as garda.

This has already been done. As I announced on 10 December last in my Law Enforcement Package for 1991, the expression bangharda has been dropped from all communications used within or emanating from the force. From that date no woman member of the force has the prefix "ban" applied to her official designation as garda, sergeant, etc.
