Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Height Requirements.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

61 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice if he will amend the regulations governing the minimum height requirements for entry to the Garda Síochána, so that either a minimum does not apply, or the Garda authorities will be permitted to apply flexibility.

Seán Barrett

Question:

133 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to amend regulations in relation to minimum height requirements necessary to gain entry to the Garda Síochána; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 61 and 133 together.

The Garda Síochána entry regulations provide that the Commissioner shall not admit a person as a trainee member of the force unless, in the case of a man, he is not less than five feet nine inches in height and, in the case of a woman, she is not less than five feet five inches in height.

The Garda authorities wish to retain these height requirements and I am disposed to be guided by them in this matter.
