Vol. 404 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire (Dublin) New Garda Station.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

147 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice the progress which has been made to secure a site in central Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin for a new Garda station; and if he has consulted with the Ministers for the Marine and the Environment about the possible use of the Department of the Marine property at the back of Dún Laoghaire Town Hall, for the new Garda station.

The Garda Divisional Headquarters building in Dún Laoghaire is in a very poor condition and in urgent need of replacement. It has been necessary to try to find an alternative site as the existing station site could not accommodate the proposed new station. My Department examined a number of sites in central Dún Laoghaire and identified the site, which the Deputy refers to, as the most suitable site for the new station.

This site is held by the Department of the Marine and is, at present, being used by that Department in the running of Dún Laoghaire Harbour. The view of the interim Dún Laoghaire Harbour Board is that the site is likely to be crucial to the future operation and development of the harbour and, on that basis, it is intended to retain it in the ownership of the Department of the Marine.
Efforts to secure a suitable alternative, centrally-located site have, so far, been unsuccessful but are ongoing. In the absence of a more central site, a site on Kill Avenue, adjacent to the new fire station, has now been made available.
