Question:42 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of permanent staff employed by local authorities in the years 1986 and 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.
Based on returns provided to my Department by local authorities, the number of offices filled on a permanent basis in local authorities at 31 December 1986 was 9,228 and the corresponding figure for 1989 — the latest year for which information is available — was 7,949. The returns also show that the total number of persons employed in non-officer grades at 31 December 1986 was 25,327 and the corresponding figure for 1989 was 20,621.
